Happy holidays, friend!
Today’s 12 Days of Tom is about the three richest Americans: Jeff Bezos, Bill Gates, and Warren Buffett. Together, these three men are worth more than $300,000,000,000 (that’s $300 billion — if you had to count the zeroes a couple times, you’re not alone).
It’s difficult to come up with an exact number of what these three could contribute because we don’t have their tax returns here in front of us, but the money coming in from a wealth tax alone on these three individuals could be more than $60 billion over 10 years. That could cover nearly half of Tom’s $125 billion dollar plan to support Historically Black Colleges and Universities. Or it could go towards affordable housing. Or investing in clean energy infrastructure. Once we get our tax system to a fair and equitable place, there’s basically no limit to what we could get done.
And the fact is, these three — along with any person whose wealth is over $32 million — should pay to bring the American dream within closer reach for those who are currently overlooked or let down by our government. And don’t worry about the millionaires and billionaires — they’ll still have way more than they could ever spend.
Onward,
Frances
