Dear Friends,
As we celebrate International Day for Universal Access to Information today (28 September), Iran is being subjected to a bloody crackdown and massive censorship. The authorities are unleashing chaos throughout the country in response to a wave of protests triggered by Masha Amini’s death on 16 September. Dozens of journalists have been arrested and at least 41 protesters have already been killed. The situation is appalling.
After heavily restricting access to WhatsApp and Instagram, the authorities are now targeting journalists and are sending a clear message, that no coverage of the protests will be tolerated. Reporters Without Borders (RSF) is demanding the immediate release of the detained journalists and the immediate lifting of all restrictions that deprive Iranians of the right to be informed.
The government is imposing a total blackout on Iran that has already left too many victims. Help the women and men who are risking their lives every day to resist this unprecedented assault on the right to news and information in Iran.
