The Minnesota Department of Revenue updated the list of tax preparers subject to penalties [ [link removed] ].
We must post the names of any tax preparers assessed a preparer penalty in excess of $1,000 or convicted of a crime related to tax preparation.
*What should I know?
*We do not require tax preparers to be licensed, but we do expect them to follow standards of ethics and conduct. Those with credentials - such as certified public accountants, enrolled agents, or attorneys - must also follow a code of ethics for their profession. If a preparer does not follow the required standards, they may face penalties or criminal prosecution.
*What can the department do?
*We may assess tax preparers a $500 penalty each time they willfully attempt to understate the correct tax or recklessly disregard tax law while preparing a return.
*What can I do?
*Individuals and businesses should choose their tax preparer carefully. For more information, see Choosing a Tax Preparer [ [link removed] ].
