This is how our attorneys spent 2019 – and what they predict 2020 will look like for the most critical civil rights and liberties fights.

Hi ACLU Supporter –

2019 was a tough year, to put it lightly. We faced an onslaught of abortion bans and attacks on the asylum system, fought and defeated the census citizenship question, and brought the first ever trans civil rights case to the Supreme Court. And there are no signs of slowing down.

We sat down with four ACLU attorneys to get their take on the biggest challenges of the past year, and what's to come in 2020. Read what they have to say. ([link removed])

Brigitte: My favorite moment of 2019 was calling the clinic we represent in Kentucky and telling them the good news that the judge blocked the state abortion ban.

Omar: Our team has built a new set of muscles as we adapt to new challenges – challenges that would have been extraordinary and unusual in the past, which are now the norm.

Chase: I'll never forget the feeling of coming out of the Supreme Court and seeing this crowd of trans people and allies chanting to Aimee while we walked across the plaza. It's a special reminder that it's not about what happens in court, it's about how we move forward.

Dale: The census case was maybe the most significant challenge in my professional life. We went from a trial decision to the Supreme Court in only three months. I'm still recovering.

We already know that 2020 will be non-stop – with the presidential election, decennial census, and historic Supreme Court decisions on the horizon. So as we gear up for 2020, take a look back on the year behind us and what's ahead. ([link removed])

Thanks for being a part of this fight,

The ACLU team
