Membership dollars help us pay for investigations like the one we published last week about widespread safety failures prior to a U.S. Navy warship burning down. Members help support our regional newsrooms, too: A few weeks ago, our Midwest office reported on how Chicago is planning to lease land owned by the public housing authority for a billionaire’s soccer team’s practice site rather than use it for housing. Donations from people all over the country also help us cover critical topics like the threats to our democracy — earlier this month we revealed how a new wave of voting restrictions will make voting harder for people who struggle to read.
