Dear John,
It’s hard to believe it is already October — one of the most beautiful months of the year in Maine. The poet Paul Laurence Dunbar wrote of October:
October is the treasurer of the year,
And all the months pay bounty to her store;
The fields and orchards still their tribute bear,
And fill her brimming coffers more and more
But she, with youthful lavishness,
Spends all her wealth in gaudy dress,
And decks herself in garments bold
Of scarlet, purple, red, and gold…
As we consider what October means for each of us, we’re going to learn together about what Maine’s Secretary of State Shenna Bellows and her staff are doing to keep Maine’s elections safe, secure, and accessible. We’re also going to learn how to utilize pollinators in our spaces and explore the role that small-scale farms can play in environmental conservation.
We look forward to seeing you in October!
