Job Posting: Senior Entomology Technician
The Maine Forest Service Forest Health and Monitoring (FHM) Division has a current vacancy for a Senior Entomology Technician in the southern Maine area. FHM cooperates with other state, local, and federal collaborators to support the overall mission of the Maine Forest Service to protect and enhance the forest resources of Maine for the benefit of present and future generations. Through statewide forest health monitoring systems and advice and assistance for pest management and damage prevention to homeowners, municipalities and forest landowners and managers, the division supports the overall health of Maine?s forest resources.
*BRIEF JOB DESCRIPTION:* ?This is technical services work involving detection, evaluation, and impact assessment of entomological/pathological problems in both field and laboratory environments and conducting a wide variety of forest resources surveys. This position may supervise or act as lead for technical and seasonal personnel assigned to assist in meeting project objectives. Work is performed under limited supervision. Supervision may be exercised over subordinate personnel.?
Work may include:
* Establishing temporary and permanent forested and non-forested survey plots and conducting a variety of surveys to mark area
* Collect data for monitoring and assessment, and identify damage and environmental impacts
* Providing diagnostic services and technical advice regarding insect and disease problems to landowners, the public, and other agencies to assess problems, recommend controls, and protect resources.
* Performing inspections and surveys of state and federally regulated pest to prevent the introduction or spread of foreign or quarantined pests
* Collects, processes, and analyzes field samples to determine insect species, development stages, populations, and host reaction
* Collaborates with universities and state and federal agencies on insect and disease projects to provide information and services to landowners
* Establishes and maintains record keeping system for plot maps, maps, and land ownership to maintain required records and keep superiors informed.
The position requires knowledge of integrated pest management in forest and tree systems, forest ecology and entomology principles; ability to become adept at use of MS Office and ArcGIS Software Suites and licensed as a commercial pesticide applicator in multiple categories related to position duties; and excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication, and presentations skills. Successful candidates will demonstrate an ability to work well as a leader and team player and independently; and, experience organizing, prioritizing, and managing multiple work projects and types of activities, while meeting and managing deadlines.

FHM cooperates with other state, local, and federal collaborators to support the overall mission of the Maine Forest Service to protect and enhance the forest resources of Maine for the benefit of present and future generations. Through statewide forest health monitoring systems and advice and assistance for pest management and damage prevention to homeowners, municipalities and forest landowners and managers, the division supports the overall health of Maine?s forest resources.
*BRIEF JOB DESCRIPTION:* ?This is professional work supporting the browntail moth mitigation fund and providing technical assistance for pest management. Work will primarily support browntail moth education, survey, monitoring and support of mitigation fund administration.? It may also include overseeing and conducting insect surveys and evaluations, monitoring insect and host conditions, conducting management trials and providing technical assistance for control work, including aerial treatment campaigns.? Work is performed under limited supervision.
Work may include, design, administration and coordination of survey programs; design, oversight and implementation of forest insect investigations, field studies, management trials, management campaigns, impact evaluations; provide diagnosis and recommend management options for forest health concerns; analyze, translate, employ lab and field data to determine program effectiveness, prepare technical reports and recommendations; present data, findings and recommendations to a variety of audiences as a basis for decision making in management of forest health; develop and maintain expertise in coordinating and providing technical support for pesticide control programs including aerial operations; prepare information for the public including but not limited to technical reports, information sheets web pages, workshops, exhibits for broad audiences interested in forest and shade tree conditions, survey activities and management recommendations;? other duties in support of the bureau and division mission.
