Friends, Visitors from all over the world, Americans from every corner of the country, and Minnesotans from every zip code understand the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness is a special place. From the pristine, clear waters to the unspoiled forests to its unmatched stillness and quiet, the BWCA is an irreplaceable refuge for millions. We have an obligation to protect it. That's why I authored the Boundary Waters Wilderness Protection and Pollution Prevention Act – my bill to permanently protect the BWCA from toxic mining pollution. While I’m grateful the Biden administration canceled Twin Metals’ leases for sulfide-ore copper mining next to the Boundary Waters, our work is not over until our nation’s most popular wilderness is permanently protected. We need Congressional action as bold as our wilderness is breathtaking. That’s why the Boundary Waters Wilderness Protection and Pollution Prevention Act permanently prohibits dangerous sulfide-ore mining across 234,328 acres of federal land in the BWCA’s watershed.
