John, you've probably heard of "greenwashing."

It’s when companies make vague promises about climate and sustainability to improve their public image via things like branding changes, meaningless green labels, or making long-term net zero emission pledges with no plan to achieve them.

When hearing the term “greenwashing,” your mind probably turns immediately to fossil fuel companies. But just as important are their public relations firms who promote and pride themselves on misguiding the public. These PR firms should also be held accountable.

That’s exactly what SEEC Member Rep. Katie Porter is doing. As the leader of the House Natural Resource Committee’s oversight panel, she led a hearing about the role of PR agencies in preventing climate action. Not surprisingly, no representatives from these agencies attended (despite the invitation).

That’s why in conjunction with its hearing, the House Natural Resource Committee's oversight panel also released a report on these agencies’ misleading tactics on behalf of their fossil fuel clients. Their findings are truly nefarious: These PR agencies aren’t just spreading misinformation and propping up false climate-conscious press statements – they’re gloating about it when submitting for industry awards.

While fossil fuel companies are malicious for throwing their marketing dollars at these tactics, it’s these public relations firms who are the evil masterminds behind misleading the public and getting in the way of making transformational climate action.

SEEC Members like Rep. Katie Porter have seen all these manipulation tactics and more in their daily work to uncover the truth of the impact large corporations have on our environment. It’s tough work, but it’s effective: Due to SEEC Members’ advocacy, Congress is finally holding a spotlight on these firms that have been operating in the shadows for decades. Will you join them in standing up to bad actor corporations, John, and contribute to SEEC members now so they can continue this work? [[link removed]]
