Senator Manchin just released the “Energy Independence and Security Act of 2022,” a bill that would attempt to ram through the Mountain Valley Pipeline and radically weaken safeguards for our communities and environment. The bill was released just days before Majority Leader Chuck Schumer will force a vote on the legislation. This is an unacceptable sacrifice of Appalachian communities and people living near fossil fuel projects. We need your help to stop it!

The bill is the product of a side deal between West Virginia Sen. Joe Manchin and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer — who intends to attach it to a spending bill that needs to pass by September 30 to avoid a government shutdown. This is a reckless move that puts our climate and communities at risk.

The proposals would attempt to mandate completion of the Mountain Valley Pipeline, in addition to attempting to limit state authority to review new fossil fuel projects under the Clean Water Act. The bill would try to require federal agencies to rush permit reviews, and limit — or even avoid — review under the National Environmental Policy Act.
