My opponent was recently asked whether he would vote for a government shutdown if elected to Congress. His response? “I’m not going to show my cards.”

This is an absolutely unacceptable answer for someone running to represent a district with over 30,000 federal workers — all of whom could be impacted in a government shutdown.

Too often in our political discourse, we forget the value of our federal workers — the exact people who stand to lose when Republicans force unnecessary government shutdowns. Federal workers uphold our national security, transportation, essential services, and landmarks. They are what makes our country run effectively.

But time and time again, the far right demonizes federal workers and uses them as political pawns. In fact, when I first entered Congress, we were in the middle of a government shutdown caused by a Donald Trump temper tantrum over his inability to get Congress to fund his border wall. Millions of workers (including many constituents of mine) were furloughed without pay for weeks, and real economic hardship was felt among them.

I will always use my platform and my voice to protect federal workers, but if the GOP takes back Congress, those workers are likely to face more disruptions to their lives. Make no mistake: a Republican majority will play dangerous political games with the budget process that threaten further shutdowns.
