The COVID-19 pandemic has changed business operations in fundamental ways. In many industries, virtual interaction is now far more common than in-person interaction. Virtual workplaces do offer a variety of benefits, such as greater flexibility and time management, leading to better work-life balance. However, the lack of in-person interactions comes with the loss of certain experiences that many workers once enjoyed.
Younger professionals have been thrust into this virtual workplace world before they were able to properly experience the benefits of in-person workplaces. NVAHA recognizes the benefits of flexibility, but acknowledges that face-to-face opportunities provide value that cannot be replicated virtually. Many young professionals feel the absence of a network with their Northern Virginia peers in the affordable housing and community development space, and have expressed a desire to meet in person to engage and learn from each other.
In 2023, NVAHA will convene the "Rising Housing Leaders Network of NoVA,” providing an opportunity for members to meet both virtually and in-person for a variety of activities, as well as a learning environment for topics of interest. The Network will be guided by the interests of the group's members, who will be responsible for creating agendas with discussion topics of their choice. This could include regional housing activities, invitations to guest speakers, opportunities for professional certification and continued education, volunteer opportunities, networking, and happy hours.
Early to mid-career professionals in the housing and community development space, either nonprofit or for-profit, are encouraged to join us, including those engaged in tenants’ rights groups and community organizers. We also welcome rising professionals in the healthcare, environmental and transportation space - sectors that are critical to maintaining healthy, sustainable, and diverse communities.
Please reach out to [email protected] if you are a younger professional who is interested in joining this network. There is a simple application that you will be asked to complete. We are excited about this new program for NVAHA, and look forward to convening the next generation of housing and community development leaders in 2023!
Sincerely,
Michelle
