The protests stemmed from an incident in which 22-year old Mahsa Amini was arrested and killed after being taken to a “re-education center” by Iran’s morality police. Since then, Iranian women are protesting by burning their hijabs and cutting their hair and demonstrations against the theocratic state have spread to 80 Iranian cities. The Iranian People are saying “No to the Islamic Republic.” Iranian government leaders have curbed access to the internet and phones, and warned Western nations and the media against ‘violating Iran’s sovereignty’ in support of ‘rioters.’ Calling on the U.S. to take a stand against Iran’s despotism and to abandon negotiations for a new Iran Nuclear Deal, Leora Levy issued the following statement. “The Iranian people have long endured the harsh realities of life under a totalitarian, theocratic regime. I stand with the women of Iran and the Iranian people. “Meanwhile the Biden Administration continues to legitimize Iran’s theocratic state by going forward with negotiations for a new nuclear agreement – this is wrong. After decades in politics, Joe Biden and his rubber stamp Dick Blumenthal still do not understand the significance behind Ronald Regan’s famous peace through strength mantra. Instead, Blumenthal supported the Iran Nuclear Deal in 2015 and has failed to answer my calls about how he would vote on a new Iran Deal.
