hear about this?

Kastellio Vaughan, a person incarcerated at Elmore Correctional Facility
in Alabama, looked healthy the last time his sister saw him in July. But
things changed, and fast.

3 weeks ago, Kastellio had been complaining about stomach pain. His family
then received a call from a fellow incarcerated person: Kastellio had
undergone surgery at the prison, where they removed part of his intestine.

Kastellio’s sister then received photos — disturbing photos. In the images
Kastellio lost a dangerous amount of weight, has a long scar down his
chest, and has his head to the side with his eyes rolled to the back of
his head.

Under the images it said “GET HELP.”

The images are so bad, we chose not to include them in this email.

He looks near-death. 

This is a BLATANT human rights violation. And it’s exactly the kind of
horror we see from mass incarceration everyday, which is why we fight so
hard at Real Justice to elect District Attorneys who focus the resources
of their office on rehabilitation, treatment, and other alternatives to
incarceration.

Our DAs fight these kinds of issues head on, by working to reduce the
footprint of the horrific prison system and the crimes committed by the
people who run them.

Every single DA candidate we have helped elect over the past five years
has led to more wrongful convictions being overturned, more kids treated
like kids, and more people getting the treatment and rehabilitation they
need instead of jail cells.

And November is a BIG opportunity to expand our movement, with 9 Real
Justice DAs on the ballot. With your help we can make sure that even more
civil-rights minded DAs get elected and hold the people who commit these
human rights abuses accountable, instead of propping up a system that
allows these inhumane conditions to continue.

how much we can fight to elect DAs who will end mass incarceration and the
human rights abuses that come with it.
