My latest OpEd for the Idaho Falls Post Register.

John,

In my latest OpEd I did something that many people might consider unusual for someone running for office – I told the plain and simple truth.

Writing for the Idaho Falls Post Register, I pointed out that nearly half of Idaho families are just one car repair, failed water heater or medical emergency away from serious financial hardship.

Imagine being one car wreck or one unexpected layoff away from losing your home? How can we expect people to build their lives and plan for the future under those conditions?

I’m running for U.S. Senate because it’s time we had a senator who is willing to speak the hard truths. And John, my opponent is not being truthful.

The Republican incumbent Mike Crapo had an OpEd of his own recently. He tried to blame skyrocketing home prices, which have been trending upwards for years, on recent interest rate changes made by the Federal Reserve.

Crapo’s “opinion” is not only unsupported by facts, it’s a pretty convenient position for a politician who’s taken hundreds of thousands of dollars from giant corporate real estate developers and mortgage brokers over the course of his long career.

A graphic featuring data from OpenSecrets for Republican Senator Mike Crapo, first elected in 1992. It shows his highest contributors as UnitedHealth Group ($142,300), Apollo Global Management ($137,450), Capital Group ($115,200), Carlyle Group ($112,350), and Blackstone Group ($106,300).

I’m running to flip this U.S. Senate seat because we need someone in Washington who will look out for the ordinary working families of Idaho and ALWAYS put their needs over corporate mega-donors.

Unlike my opponent, I don’t take a penny from corporate PACs. I’m proud to be 100% people-funded, because it means the people of Idaho can have confidence that my vote will NEVER be bought by special interests.

There is one downside, however. It puts us at a massive fundraising disadvantage. Now, my team is resourceful and determined, and we can do a lot with a little. But we do have to hit our basic fundraising benchmarks.

Right now, we’re still $8,723 short of our EOQ fundraising goal. Can you pitch in $100 (or whatever you can spare) to help me flip this U.S. Senate seat?

Idaho families, and working people everywhere, deserve a senator who WON’T give tax breaks to billionaires while regular folks struggle to put food on the table or keep a roof over their head.

I see my neighbors struggling and, frankly, it makes me angry. It should make you angry, too.

Like many others in our community, I did all the things they told me to do to get ahead in life. I went to college, I work hard, I volunteer my time in my community, I help others, I go to church, I raise my kids and I try to be a good person.

When you have done all you were supposed to do, all that you COULD do and it is still not enough, it tells me that our system and our policies are stacked against you in favor of those same special interests dumping hundreds of thousands of dollars into Mike Crapo’s campaign coffers.

No, everyone is not okay. But we could be.

We can have a government that is truly accountable to the people and puts working families first. We can have representatives who know what it’s like to choose between paying your rent or life-saving medications, or to trade off groceries for a tank of gas.

We can have a government that fights for us if we elect leaders who are truly accountable to us. That’s my commitment to you as your next senator from Idaho.

I’m not giving up on Idaho, and I hope you won’t either. I will keep going because I believe our community is worth fighting for, and we deserve better.

We have until Friday to close the gap on our quarterly fundraising goal, and I’d really like to meet that goal early this week so I can focus on preparing for my upcoming debate with Mike Crapo. Can you pitch in $100, $50, or any amount today?

I’m truly grateful for all of your support. It would be my honor to serve as your senator and fight for you.

- David

David Roth is a single, gay dad running to flip a U.S. Senate seat in Idaho. His opponent is an extremist “pro-life” Republican who’s been in politics for 37 years. David stepped up to serve the state that has been his home most of his life, where he is now raising his two young sons, because every state is worth fighting for. There has never been an openly gay man elected to the U.S. Senate. Help us make history this year. Pitch in now to flip this seat and send David to D.C.
