Hi John,

It’s Elizabeth Warren—and today I want to talk with you about my former
student, Congresswoman Katie Porter.

Back in 2000, before either of us were in office, I was a law professor
and Katie was one of my students. I taught a bankruptcy class that was
held early in the morning. Katie came on the first day bright-eyed and
ready to go. When the first answer she gave wasn’t her strongest, she came
to my office hours and said, “Please keep calling on me. I am going to
learn to do this.”

She certainly did learn, John.
Years later, in 2012, then-Attorney General of California Kamala Harris
secured a settlement of $18 billion from our country’s biggest banks for
their predatory lending practices that spurred the 2008 housing crisis.
She asked if I knew anyone who could work as an “independent monitor” to
make sure the Big Banks actually paid California families the money they
were now owed. It was a massive undertaking, but I knew just the person
for the job: my former student Katie Porter. She held the banks’ feet to
the fire and ensured families received the money they were owed.

After Donald Trump got elected in 2016, Katie knew there was more work to
be done—she was going to run for office.

Since then Katie has continued to be a champion for families. With the
help of her whiteboard, she’s stood up to CEOs from Big Banks and Big Oil
companies, held government officials accountable, and brought attention to
some of the issues that touch working people’s lives the most. She’s been
relentless in the fight to lower the cost of child care and hold
corporations accountable for price-gouging.

It has been such an honor to work alongside Katie for so many years. But
right now, she’s facing her toughest election yet. Due to redistricting,
she has to introduce herself to thousands of new voters, and her district
is made up of an equal number of registered Democrats and Republicans.

I know that when these new voters hear about Katie, they’re going to be
inspired to cast their ballots for her. [ [link removed] ]If you can, consider pitching
