Dearest friends,

As the saying goes, the night is always darkest before the dawn. Today is winter solstice, the longest, darkest night of the year.

It is no coincidence that our democracy is also facing one of its darkest times in modern history.

Our planet is on fire. Our elections are being bought and paid for by the wealthy. People are dying early because private insurance companies deny coverage. Children have been locked in cages, and died there. White supremacy has found its way back into the mainstream, thanks to encouragement from our racist President. Wages are stagnant while the cost of living has skyrocketed. An entire generation is crippled by debt they may never be able to pull their way out of.

It is easy to feel gloomy in all this darkness. It is easy to fall into despair.

But, as the days gradually grow longer, and the light grows brighter, it’s time to renew our commitment to fighting for truth, for justice and for real, meaningful change.

It’s time to work together to quiet the cynicism, lift up the good, and strive for better. We must make what seems impossible, possible.

I am ready. I am ready to strive for a better tomorrow. I am ready to bring out the best in all of us. I am ready to dig down deep and take this positive people-powered movement from Maine all the way to Washington, D.C.

I couldn’t do that without you. I am grateful you are involved. I am grateful for your hope that drowns out the despair, and for your activism and persistence that ensures that one day, soon, peace and justice for all will prevail. You give me the hope and the energy to keep going .

Thank you for being part of this movement and this moment.

With so much hope, endless gratitude and lots of light,

Betsy

PS - From my family to yours, happiest of holidays.
