NEWS & RAPID RESPONSE

GLAAD Points to Book Bans as Just One Arm of Organized National Attack on LGBTQ Youth

Banned Books Week

Banned Books Week (September 18-24) is an annual event celebrating the freedom and constitutional right to read, especially in the classroom. GLAAD urges reporters covering Banned Books Week to properly contextualize book bannings as part of a larger organized movement to target LGBTQ youth. A recent report released by PEN America shows that 41% of books banned over the past year were targeted due to LGBTQ content. GLAAD President and CEO, Sarah Kate Ellis was quoted saying "There’s no separating book bans from ‘Don’t Say Gay’ laws, attacks on healthcare and sports for trans youth, and the hundreds of other bills and policies that put LGBTQ youth at the center of a target built by extremist groups and politicians. Everyone deserves to see themselves represented in books and other forms of media, and the targeting of LGBTQ youth through book bans and other anti-LGBTQ school policies must end.” Click here to read more.

As part of Banned Book Week, GLAAD's Vice President of Communications & Talent, Anthony Allen Ramos, interviewed author Crystal Frasier, whose graphic novel Cheer Up! Love and Pompoms with illustrator Val Wise won this year's GLAAD Media Award for Outstanding graphic novel. Additionally, GLAAD President and CEO, Sarah Kate Ellis, spoke on a panel of LGBTQ authors.

LATINX HERITAGE MONTH

GLAAD releases guide for industry leaders in entertainment

Latinx Heritage Month

Latinx Heritage Month began September 15th, and GLAAD has been rolling out a slew of resources and content in observation and celebration.

This week, the Spanish-Language Media team introduced a new guide in both English and Spanish, to help creators (writers, producers and others working in entertainment in the US, Latin America and Spain) do more and better LGBTQ-inclusive storytelling. The guide draws from GLAAD’s efforts inspiring and teaching creators from film studios and series writer's rooms around the country to do better work, and placed those best practices into one guide specially tailored for people creating more diverse storytelling, and wanting to reach the billions of people who watch Spanish-Language shows and films.

Check out this blog post that celebrates the impact of Latinx people in entertainment, and discusses the everlasting debate between using Latine and Latinx and this blog post that highlights Latinx and LGBTQ inclusive shows.

BRIGGLE FAMILY UPDATE

GLAAD presented the Briggle family with your words of support

Briggle Family

Earlier this year, GLAAD and partner organizations released this PSA featuring Amber Briggle, the Texas mom, and her transgender teenager, Max. The PSA reminds the world of just how vulnerable our transgender youth are and how much they need vocal allies. Kids like Max are viciously targeted by anti-transgender politicians and school boards across the country every day. In the previous GLAAD Insider, we shared an opportunity to share a message of support to the Briggle family. Recently, GLAAD surprised the Briggle family with a giant card featuring all of your kind words. Check out their reaction here
