Weekly Parliamentary Diary
A dark day as Johnson elected
Watching Boris Johnson become Prime Minister was a dark day for our politics. He has come to power on a platform of empty rhetoric and false promises, make no mistake, we deserve better than this.

We all now have a duty to stand united against the politics this Government represents and do all we can to ensure that their time in office is as short as possible.

Boris Johnson has assembled a Cabinet of hard-line conservatives committed to delivering an extreme Brexit or catastrophic No Deal. This is the most far right Government the UK has ever seen.

The new Prime Minister will quickly find out that there is no mandate for his fantasy Brexit or extreme views. With a General Election on us at any moment the only way forward is to get ready to fight, join forces and work together to defeat this Government and defeat Brexit.
Wales is leading the way on tackling the Climate Emergency
As part of an Environmental Audit Select Committee session on climate change and biodiversity, I was glad to see that Lord Deben, Chair of the Committee on Climate Change, acknowledged that Wales is leading the way in this area.

I'm proud to have developed the Welsh Government's Wellbeing of Future Generations Act, an example to the rest of the U.K on how to deal with the climate emergency and many other issues.

During the session I also asked questions of Tony Juniper of Natural England about the need for him to meet with Natural Resources Wales and the Welsh Government to engage more on their nature protection programmes.

You can see some of my questions here and you can see the whole Environmental Audit Select Committee session here
Cardiff North residents missing out on Pension Credit
In Cardiff North nearly 1,400 older people are missing out on a combined total of over £4 million of Pension Credit every year. This is leaving an unacceptable number of older people in our community having to juggle between paying for food or fuel when Pension Credit could cover both.

I urge the Government to do far more to ensure that pensioners living in poverty receive this vital lifeline. No pensioner should miss out on their pension entitlement.

I urge all pensioners to look into the benefits they should be receiving to ensure they are not missing out on their entitlements.

Labour for a Green New Deal launch

I took part in the Labour for a Green New Deal launch event this week. The programme was launched by Ed Miliband and a number of my fellow Labour colleagues turned up to show their support. Labour is working to transform our economy and tackle the climate emergency. We have to deal with the environmental crisis and the inequality crisis together.

You can read a full breakdown of the event here.

Letter urging the release of Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe
I was proud to have signed the above letter which urged the new Prime Minister to do all they can to free Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe and bring her home from her Iranian imprisonment. We cannot stand by whilst she and her family are suffering.
Supporting Whitchurch and Tongwynlais Council Candidate Marc Palmer

It was great to be out campaigning with Marc Palmer, our fantastic Labour candidate for the Whitchurch and Tongwynlais Council by-election.

As an active local businessman and campaigner, he will make a great representative for the community.

Lydstep Flats public meeting
I spoke at the Lydstep Flats fire safety public meeting earlier today alongside Llandaff North Councillors Dilwar Ali and Jennifer Burke-Davies and Jane Thomas, Assistant Director for Housing & Communities. The Council put forward their proposals for re-cladding the building in the summer of 2020. We must take urgent action ensure that residents are protected from the worst effects of this winter.

Whitchurch Tennis Club
It was good to meet with Mike Lubienski, Chair of Whitchurch Tennis Club this week to discuss the ongoing situation around them needing to renew their lease. I will continue to do all I can to fight for and support the continuation of this brilliant club at the heart of our community.
Meeting with local climate campaigners
It was great to meet with Cardiff North constituents who are members of the peaceful Extinction Rebellion climate campaign group. We discussed their proposals for citizens assemblies, setting and reaching climate change targets, and local steps we can take to tackle the climate emergency.
