Dear John, We’ve had a busy December in D.C. addressing a variety of issues through legislation. Here’s a quick round up:
Week of Dec 2:
I stand by Israel and am opposed to any efforts to intentionally distort the country’s position, so I voted no on H.R. 326. Read my statement here.
Here are some bills that passed under suspension:
H.R.4803 - Citizenship for Children of Military Members and Civil Servants Act. This bill establishes that a foreign-born child of a U.S. citizen member of the Armed Forces or government employee may automatically acquire U.S. citizenship even if the child is not residing in the United States.
H.Res.546 - Disapproving the Russian Federation's inclusion in future Group of Seven summits until it respects the territorial integrity of its neighbors and adheres to the standards of democratic societies. This resolution calls on all leaders of the Group of Seven (a group consisting of the seven largest major advanced economies, as determined by the International Monetary Fund) to oppose Russia's readmission into the group. The resolution also condemns Russia's assaults on democratic societies worldwide and its aggressive actions in Ukraine.
Week of Dec 9:
I was pleased to hear that the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) will be coming up for a vote the week of Dec. 16. This was good news for Nebraska’s ag and manufacturing industries. You can read my statement here.
The House and Senate hammered out their versions of the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2020. It is a total victory not only for the Second Congressional District, but for all of America. Read why here.
Many Nebraska farmers and ranchers reached out to our office to express their opposition to the Farm Workforce Modernization Act, which would establish a certified agricultural worker (CAW) status and change the H-2A temporary worker program. I stood by Nebraska Ag with my no vote on the legislation, as explained here.
We need to find a way to lower the cost of prescription drugs for our senior citizens and all patients. That is why I agreed to cosponsor H.R. 19, the Lower Costs, More Cures Act. These bipartisan reforms will lower out of pocket spending without crushing investment in the research and development of new cures. Read more here.
Week of December 16:
After fighting for over a year alongside my colleagues to bring the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement to a vote, we passed the measure in the House. Read my statement here.
Finally, we voted on the articles of impeachment. I am strongly opposed to this impeachment. No law was broken, no high crimes or misdemeanors, no impeachable offenses. Ukraine has received aid one week prior to the law's requirement aid that was previously rejected by the administration before it. Watch my speech here.
I’m looking forward to spending time with family and friends over these holidays and I look forward to working on a myriad of issues when we return to the Hill.
-Don
