CfA's July 26, 2019 Newsletter
Thank you for your continued support of CfA. Here's an update on our latest work:

On Tuesday, the Office of Inspector General at the U.S. Department of Interior confirmed it is investigating the Interior Department's Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) Awareness Process after CfA and other watchdog groups called for an investigation.

Additionally, CfA’s previous work was featured in several stories this week.
* Rewire.News wrote about our letters to Apple and Google, calling on the companies to remove anti-choice apps from their platforms.
* Multiple outlets wrote about how a new nonprofit founded by the Texas anti-choice hardliner, Carol Everett, filed a lawsuit demanding access to federal grant funding, despite having been existence for one day.
* The Washington Post covered CfA's efforts to hold Obria - a Title X grant recipient that opposes birth control - accountable.

On Tuesday, the Interior Department's Inspector General confirmed ([link removed]) it is investigating the agency's FOIA Awareness Process. Political appointees at the Department appear to be using the Awareness Process to interfere with the release of documents in response to FOIA requests. In June ([link removed]) , CfA and other watchdog groups called for an investigation of the Awareness Process.

Furthermore, on Tuesday, CfA, along with Western Values Project, a Montana-based nonprofit conservation group, submitted new evidence to the Office of Inspector General indicating additional interference with public records at the Interior Department. On Wednesday, Rewire.News wrote about CfA's letters to Apple and Google calling on the companies to remove anti-choice apps from their platforms. (Rewire.News ([link removed]) )

CfA’s letters document how apps belonging to the anti-abortion behemoth Susan B. Anthony List and anti-choice/anti-LGBT group, the Family Research Council have violated App Store and Google Play rules by 1) misusing users’ personal information to recruit new members, 2) failing to provide privacy policies, 3) utilizing template-designed apps that have been banned, and 4) requiring users to sign in to an app before they are able to access its features. A new nonprofit founded by ex-Heidi Group chief Carol Everett, Vita Nuova, is suing the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) for family planning funding. (Politico ([link removed]) , Austin American-Statesman ([link removed]) )

CfA has taken action to hold the Heidi Group accountable. In March 2019, CfA sent a letter to HHS officials calling for an investigation of the Heidi Group and Obria for submitting an error-ridden application for Title X family planning funding. (Read more ([link removed]) )

In September 2017, CfA asked the Travis County District Attorney in Austin, Texas to investigate the Heidi Group, and its executive director, Carol Everett, for misappropriating funds and engaging in deceptive business practices. CfA also asked the IRS to investigate the group’s nonprofit tax status. Texas revoked the Heidi Group’s funding in October 2018. (Read more ([link removed]) )

On Monday, The Washington Post cited CfA’s work in its profile of Obria, an anti-choice, anti-birth control religious ministry masquerading as a healthcare group. The anti-choice community has been positioning Obria as the national alternative to Planned Parenthood. (The Washington Post ([link removed]) )
