This is utterly reprehensible, but we can’t say we’re surprised. Extremists will go to great lengths to placate corporate donors and silence the public’s concern about the growing threat of climate change.
John: Republicans are now targeting the ability of Indigenous people to organize, assemble, and exercise their First Amendment rights. Across the country, conservative-majority legislatures, backed by the extremist group American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC), have passed numerous laws criminalizing the protests of Indigenous climate activists.
The laws are written to be intentionally misleading: legislators claim they’re “protecting critical infrastructure,” but in reality, they are suppressing dissent. And the price for breaking these new laws is high — protestors can face up to 10 years in prison or one million dollars in fines.
Unsurprisingly, Republicans would seek to suppress Indigenous action on climate change. Indigenous groups have been some of the most successful advocates for halting the construction of fossil fuel projects and raising awareness about the energy industry’s impact on the environment.
But now, the forward momentum of their work is being legally constrained by new Republican legislation in 17 states. This is utterly reprehensible, but we can’t say we’re surprised.Extremists will go to great lengths to placate corporate donors and silence the public’s concern about the growing threat of climate change.
Of course, all while they resist and obstruct legislation that would actually address the real climate crises we are now facing right now.
SEEC members are working against these extremist forces by supporting policies that uplift up the concerns of Indigenous activists instead of suppressing them, and passing legislation that holds the energy industry accountable. And right now, as we head into the midterms, they need of your support.
Thanks to your help in 2020, SEEC PAC was able to re-elect over 95% of our pro-environment members to the U.S. House of Representatives — defying the odds on a night where Democrats lost seats. Now we are counting on you to help our SEEC members pass climate, clean energy and environmental justice policies in the 117th Congress while we undo the damage of the Trump Administration.
