Friend,
Did you know there have been 27 different versions of the American flag?
Actually, 28 if you count this one, which was presented to me by a group of pro-democracy, pro-reform voters shortly after I was first elected in 2018. It now hangs on the wall of our Campaign Coffeehouse:
An American flag on a gray wall. The flag is made up of small red, white, and blue postcards from volunteers to Dean Phillips.
While the flag itself may have changed over time, the values and ideals it stands for -- freedom, liberty, equality, and justice for all -- have not. It has served as a beacon of hope for a better life for millions around the world, and a source of patriotic pride for those already here. Its 13 stripes and 50 stars represent our long and complicated history as the world's oldest continuous democracy, and they remind us that we are the UNITED States of America.
Yet today, we are more divided than at nearly any other time in our history. The values and ideals that the American flag represents are under attack by grifters and conmen (and women) who seek to undermine our democracy in the naked pursuit of power, money, and status. If not confronted head-on, I fear January 6th, 2021 may be just the beginning.
That, of course, is the bad news.
Here's the good news: Decent people of all walks of life have recognized these threats, and according to recent public opinion polls, plan to vote accordingly in November. They are the true patriots -- not those who performatively put on their flag pin every morning before heading to their offices on Capitol Hill to work against the very principles on which our nation was founded. Or those who quite literally hug the flag and then incite attacks on the Capitol.
We -- all of us who believe in freedom, liberty, equality, and justice for all -- must reclaim the flag from those whose principles are antithetical to American ideals and whose policies put the American dream further out of reach for millions. I am proud to be an American, and I know you are too. Let's fly our flags proudly, and let's vote like our democracy depends on it.
-Dean
