Your members of Congress need to hear from you.

Dear Friend,
While Congress works to pass legislation to continue funding the government and prevent a shutdown, Senator Manchin and his allies are more concerned about attaching the so-called “permitting side-deal" into the must-pass funding legislation. While it would make the oil industry happy, this side-deal, released earlier this week, would exclude frontline communities from the permitting process, increase emissions by greenlighting fossil fuel projects, and override previous court rulings to allow the otherwise illegal buildout of a multibillion-dollar pipeline.
In true form, the oil industry is using its wealth and influence to undermine our democratic process and ram as many polluting projects into communities as it can before renewables make it obsolete. This industry, which has shown zero regard for the health of our communities or the habitability of our climate, should not be influencing policy in any capacity — much less be allowed to hold the federal government hostage while it takes an axe to critical environmental law protections like the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), the People’s Environmental Law.
If you believe that the health of our communities and environment should not be sacrificed for fossil fuel profits, we need you in this fight. You can help us stop this disastrous bill before it’s too late — but only if we use our voices together.
You can take all the actions below by clicking here.

Tell Congress to reject side-deals that silence communities and greenlight fossil fuel projects
The Inflation Reduction Act contained hundreds of billions of dollars to help us fight the climate crisis, but polluting industries and their allies are now looking to retaliate. They are pushing for a “permitting side-deal" that was crafted in the backrooms of Washington with no public disclosure and could now be up for a vote in Congress. The side-deal would be a handout to the fossil fuel industry and constitutes a direct attack on the health of our communities, particularly those who bear the burdens of toxic facilities. It seeks to gut bedrock environmental laws like the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), and it is being supported by the oil and gas industry, its lobbyists, and congressional allies. Tell your members of Congress to reject the side-deal.

Tell Congress to ban organophosphates
Our food system exploits the earth and poisons the farmworkers who keep everyone fed — but it doesn’t have to be that way. One small step Congress could take would be to ban organophosphates, a class of neurotoxic chemicals that are widely used as pesticides. Join us in telling your representative to support a ban on organophosphates.

Habitat destruction is making this small bird’s journey harder
Every year, thousands of red knot shorebirds fly from the southern tip of South America to their breeding grounds in the Arctic Circle. The birds make a crucial stop in Delaware Bay where they replenish their energy with horseshoe crab eggs before continuing their journey. Due to overharvesting of horseshoe crabs by the fishing industry, the Delaware Bay habitat has been degraded. As horseshoe crab numbers languish, the shorebird – which is threatened under the Endangered Species Act – has suffered as well. Take action today to urge the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission to protect the red knot and reject this dangerous proposal.

Electrify the Postal Service
Postmaster General Louis DeJoy needs to be held accountable for his actions to undermine an electric postal fleet. The Postal Service Board of Governors — the group of people charged with stewarding the Postal Service — are Postmaster General DeJoy’s bosses, but so far they have neglected to rein in DeJoy’s bad behavior. A large part of this lackadaisical attitude from the Board of Governors stems from a prevalence of Trump-appointed members, including two whose terms are expiring in December. President Biden can – and should — preemptively appoint two new members to fill these seats as soon as the terms of the Trump loyalists expire. Tell President Biden to nominate new members as soon as possible.
