Dear friends,

Democracy dies in darkness.

In Russia, it’s already night.
Since the invasion of Ukraine, Putin has imposed a free speech blackout -- burying independent media and forcing pro-democracy activists into exile. Now he’s handing draft papers to thousands of men to prop up his ever closer descent into a full-blown nuclear war!
Despite this, Russian activists are not giving up -- 1,300 have been arrested overnight, while thousands of others are resisting the call to arms, piercing the propaganda bubble, and providing help to refugees where there’s none.
This could be the war’s tipping point. But these brave activists are up against a powerful regime, and are asking for our help.

If enough of us donate just a small amount,we can power this peaceful resistance against war. We could provide grants to independent journalists and human rights activists, ensure legal defence for political prisoners, and assist those forced to flee with food, medicine, and shelter -- then supercharge our movement’s fight against tyranny everywhere.
History has shown that with enough people power, even warmongers can be stopped. As Russian dissent grows into an inspiring resistance against violence and despotism, let’s stand with them in their hour of need. Chip in now:

Russian resistance to war could make all the difference . Just last month, Ukraine’s armed forces liberated town after town in the northeast that had been under occupation for months. Perhaps the most surprising part of their victory was that Russian forces weren’t fighting back.

And day after day, anti-war dissent is rising. In response to his army’s stunning defeat, Putin is calling on an additional 300,000 men to fight. But many aren’t willing to die in a senseless war -- protests are swelling, and people from all sides of the political spectrum are speaking out.

Perhaps now more than ever, the best shot we have at peace is supporting those who are willing to say no to war.If we raise enough, we could:
Provide grants to Russian anti-war and human rights activists who are building a grassroots movement of resistance; Support independent, pro-democracy Russian media to document potential war crimes and investigate human rights violations; Assist Ukrainian and Russian refugees with food, transportation, medical treatment, legal assistance, psycho-social support, and more; Provide legal assistance for political prisoners in Russia, as well as medical treatment in the case of torture; and Power our campaigning to defend democracy everywhere , quelling dangerous disinformation and fighting back against crackdowns on civil rights and liberties. Together, let’s help turn the tide on this war. For everyone in Ukraine, for all the refugees who have lost their homes, and for the Russians being forced to support a war they don’t believe in -- let’s not let the spark of hope die. Donate now:

Since the invasion of Ukraine, our community has remained steadfast in the quest for peace. Over a million of us stood alongside Nobel Peace Prize Laureates in our call against nuclear war. We have urged the international legal community to prosecute Putin, and funded war zone investigators to collect evidence of possible war crimes. And we didn’t stop there -- as the war in Ukraine erupted, our community mobilised hundreds of thousands of dollars to help refugees, providing them with food, shelter, and safe passage. Once again, history is calling on us to act -- let’s do it together!

With hope and determination,
Kaitlin, Marigona, Bert, Camille, Adela, and the whole team at Avaaz
