There is a coordinated effort to ban books featuring issues of race, gender, rights, activism, and sexual identity in our public schools. These book bans undermine the intellectual freedom and open inquiry that are so important to democracy.
Throughout the 2021-2022 school year, 1600 book titles were banned according to a new report by PEN America. These bans are the result of a network of extremist right-wing advocacy groups.
At least 50 groups have been identified as having been involved in the book banning efforts. The result is that students are losing access to literature that prepares them to meet the struggles and complexities of democratic citizenship.

The alleged “parental rights” assertion has gone well beyond the normal give and take between parents and teachers.
It is no coincidence that many of the books being banned address LGBTQ+ themes or prominent characters of color. This is a racist and homophobic attack on children’s access to experiences outside of their own.
History has shown us what book bans can lead to. Fear of information or diverse viewpoints breeds ignorance and intolerance. Enlightenment isn’t a bad thing.
We lose ourselves in books. We find ourselves there too.
