Notes from Mike's Desk for the Week of September 19 – 23, 2022

Hello, friends. Welcome back to my newsletter highlighting what’s happening on Capitol Hill and in Louisiana’s 4th Congressional District. Thank you for subscribing and please consider recommending this resource to a friend.

IN THE HOUSE

On Wednesday, I led 15 of my House colleagues in sending a letter to Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas urging the secretary to withdraw his recently announced “public charge” policy.

The newly announced DHS policy will exclude several significant non-cash sources of federal funds—such as Medicaid—when determining a potential immigrant’s cost to taxpayers and admissibility or inadmissibility into America. The letter highlights the impracticality of excluding certain significant federal funds when determining an immigrant’s potential cost to taxpayers. I hope you’ll give it a read:

HIGHLIGHT OF THE WEEK

The big news of this cycle happened Friday. The House Republican Conference rolled out our Commitment to America—our House Republican platform for the upcoming November elections and plan of action for the next two years in the United States House of Representatives.

Here are the key elements you’ll be hearing about:

  • An Economy that’s Strong
  • A Nation that’s Safe
  • A Future that’s Built on Freedom
  • A Government that’s Accountable

You can read more about our plans in my recent Natchitoches Times op-ed:

LAGNIAPPE

On the first day of each week that Congress is in session, during the 20-minute delay between the first and second votes of the evening, a group of Members meets in a small room right outside the House Chamber to pray. On Monday, we prayed for our country, our troops and first responders, and the specific needs of friends and constituents.

As we closed our time with a prayer for wisdom and discernment, I noticed out the window the sun setting peacefully behind the Washington Monument. It was a beautiful reminder that in spite of our temporal troubles and turmoil—God is never shaken, He is always the same, and He is completely in control. What a comfort that is for all of us.
