Dear John,

The Canadian Taxpayers Federation is growing. A year ago we had 151,000 supporters. Today we are at 231,000. In one year we grew by 53%. We go to work every day to stand up for supporters like you, so we need your opinion on important issues in our 2020 survey.

Each month we continue to grow.

Why? Canadians are sick of being taxed to death by politicians and they want to fight back.

We hope you’ll join us for this fight. Can you make a donation today to keep us fighting in 2020? You can make it through our secure donation website: [link removed] ([link removed])

When Canadians stand together and push back, they win.
We’ve seen this firsthand in 2019.

Together, CTF supporters fought back in Québec against a government that was overcharging ratepayers on their Hydro bills. The CTF launched a petition, collected 75,000 names, ran ads in the premier’s riding, held press conferences and, importantly, asked those 75,000 Quebecers to hit the premier with emails and they did. The result: the government caved and will give $1.5 billion back to Québec ratepayers.

Together, CTF supporters fought back across the country against a demand from a luxury golf course to get taxpayers to pay for a new airport at their doorstep – despite two airports in the vicinity. The CTF launched a campaign, produced videos and op-eds slamming the proposal and, importantly, asked hundreds of thousands of CTF supporters to bombard the Trudeau cabinet minister responsible with emails and they did. The result: the Trudeau government said no to funding the airport.

Together, CTF supporters fought against a PST hike in Manitoba. The CTF held rallies, sent Fibber (our long-nosed, truth-in-politics mascot) after lying politicians, circulated a petition, wrote op-eds and, importantly, we asked CTF supporters to contact their politicians, and they did. The result: the Pallister government reversed the New Democrat PST hike.

These are just a few examples of the fights that you and hundreds of thousands of CTF supporters took on and won this year.

While there is strength in numbers, we are regularly outnumbered.

Just look at some of the court fights we have been in.

In Toronto, when the Ford government tried to cut the size of Toronto’s city council, the fight ended up in court. Twelve groups argued before the judges, eleven of them were opposed to cutting the fat on city council and only one – the Canadian Taxpayers Federation – stood up for taxpayers along side the Ford government. Ultimately, our side won the appeal.

In the carbon tax court battles, our lawyers appeared in court three times in 2019. We presented our arguments against the Trudeau carbon tax in Saskatchewan, Ontario and Alberta’s courts. We were the only non-government organization consistently opposing the Trudeau carbon tax.
The pro-carbon tax forces often outnumbered us 20 to one.

At the Supreme Court of Canada, the governments of B.C. and Nova Scotia are pushing back against unreasonable salary increases for judges. Five non-government groups argued before the judges, four of them were in favour of higher pay for judges, and only one – the Canadian Taxpayers Federation – stood up for taxpayers. In fact, the Provincial Court Judges’ Association of British Columbia tried to block us from even appearing.

In the fight for transparency on First Nation’s bands, the CTF found others who were standing alone. Charmaine Stick on the Onion Lake Cree Nation bravely stood alone on the side of the road on her reserve for 13 days on a hunger strike demanding accountability and transparency. But she doesn’t stand alone anymore. Thanks to the financial and emotional support of thousands of CTF supporters like you, the CTF has been able to partner with Charmaine and take her band council to court. We’ve won three times, but we’re not done yet. We will be back in court in 2020 fighting yet another appeal by the band to keep their books shut.

We will also be in front of the Supreme Court of Canada again in 2020 fighting the Trudeau carbon tax. The court has already approved the list of interveners: 36 non-government organizations, one First Nation band, two Crown corporations and six B.C. cities. Only one non-government organization – the Canadian Taxpayers Federation – and the two Saskatchewan Crown corporations will be fighting the Trudeau carbon tax.

But it’s not just in the courts where we will be taking up the battle for taxpayers in 2020. We have plans for debt clock tours, fights against new taxes and expensive entitlement programs, campaigns against Crown monopolies, battles with government union bosses asking for massive wage hikes and much more.

Your support in 2019 not only let us get into these important battles, but it helped us expand and grow. Our Generation Screwed youth initiative is running a major new campaign on campus at www.MyTaxBurden.ca ([link removed]) . Our internship program has expanded. And we were able to hire our first full-time investigative journalist this fall.

In fact, our investigative journalist just broke his first exclusive story for us: Canada sent 156 delegates ([link removed]) to the climate change conference in Madrid a few weeks ago – the second largest delegation in the world (only behind Brazil at 158).

None of these battles will be won without your guidance and support.

Merry Christmas and happy New Year from all the staff of the Canadian Taxpayers Federation.

P.S.: There are currently 6,094 registered lobbyists in Ottawa and thousands more in the provinces. Virtually every one of those lobbyists are pushing politicians to spend more of your money on their pet projects. Taxpayers need someone in their corner.
