Earlier this month, Greenpeace activists placed boulders in a so-called “protected” area of the ocean called the South West Deeps (East) located nearly 200km off the coast of Cornwall. In the last 18 months alone, the area has been industrially fished for almost 20,000 hours, causing untold devastation to marine life.
Activists and crew on board our ship, the Arctic Sunrise, had been preparing to extend the protective boulder barrier but the Government stopped us in our tracks - threatening legal action against Greenpeace.
Building boulder barriers is a popular action that works and here are five reasons why Greenpeace uses this tactic to protect our oceans.
We may have been stopped from extending our boulder barrier, but in the last week over 30,000 people have kept our campaign going. Thousands of people have emailed their MPs and some of those MPs have already promised to write to the new Environment Secretary demanding answers on destructive fishing. Result!
Can you email your MP now and ask them to write to the new Environment Minister? The more of us who email our MP, the more pressure the new Minister will feel to stop the industrial fishing frenzy.
