This is our last newsletter of the month, year, and decade! Before we jump into this busy week in Washington, let’s take a look back at the year.

2019 by the Numbers

• Hosted 4 major activist trainings in Austin, Phoenix, Cincinnati, and Atlanta

Happening on the Hill

Impeachment

Democrats have been actively working to impeach the president since he took the oath of office. This week, they finally got their wish, voting to pass two articles of impeachment. It’s worth noting the only bipartisan vote of the series was against impeachment—not one Republican voted to impeach the president, further proving the partisan nature of Pelosi’s charade.

Spending

The president signed two minibus bills to fund the government until the end of fiscal year 2020, just in time for Christmas! Once again, Dems waited until the 11th hour to fund the government, a strategy to push liberal policy riders through right before recess.

We key voted NO on the domestic spending package, which was riddled with liberal policy riders like tax extenders, Ex-Im reauthorization, and unnecessary government spending.

USMCA

The House finally took action on the United States Mexico Canada Agreement (USMCA), passing legislation to authorize USMCA with bipartisan support. The Senate is expected to take up USMCA in the new year.

Executive Director Tim Chapman released a statement in support of USMCA, saying:

USMCA is a strong piece of legislation that deserves the support of every member of Congress. The left has delayed the passage of the bill for too long, endangering the record growth of the American economy in the process. Thanks to President Trump and congressional negotiators, American businesses will be able to begin the new year with the certainty that our nation will continue to thrive and lead the world in trade.

SALT Deductions

Last, but certainly not least, the House voted to repeal the State and Local Taxes (SALT) deduction cap, further promoting the interests of high-tax liberal states. In 2018 when Trump signed the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, the bill included a provision to cap how much taxpayers could deduct their state and local taxes. These caps to SALT deductions promoted fairness in the tax code—no longer would low-tax states be stuck with the bill from high-tax states.

Here’s what Tim Chapman had to say:

The tax bill House Democrats have put on the schedule this week claims to promote fairness in the tax code, but it really promotes the interest of liberal states. It is anything but fair. It will only benefit a minority of Americans at the expense of those who have chosen to live in states with smaller tax burdens. SALT deductions are nothing more than a federal subsidy for high state and local taxes, which in turn makes individuals in low-tax states responsible for subsidizing more expensive governments elsewhere.

New Pro-Life Rule from President Trump

Just when you thought nothing more could possibly happen in an already very busy week, President Trump released another pro-life rule to require insurance companies to provide Obamacare Exchange enrollees with a separate bill for the portion of their insurance premium that goes towards abortion coverage.

Jessica Anderson explains:

Leftists will decry this rule because it creates price transparency for consumers, reminding them that a portion of their insurance premiums are being used to fund the abortion industry.

In truth, the HHS rule is in line with what American’s want: It addresses one of Obamacare’s many problems by fulfilling the spirit of the long-standing, bipartisan Hyde Amendment, which bans federal funding for abortion.
