U.S. Department of Labor’s Equity in Focus Summit
On Thursday, Care That Works’ Senior Researcher, Sarah Jimenez, and Building Pathways’ Deputy Director, Nancy Luc joined the U.S. Department of Labor Women’s Bureau and the Worker Institute as guest speakers for the ‘Equity in Focus Summit.’ Sarah and Nancy highlighted our Pilot child care model as a demonstration program that prioritizes gender and racial equity by investing in women of color as child care providers and bridging the child care gap for mothers of color entering Boston’s unionized trades.

Care That Works was honored to represent the Pilot program in this space and also learn from leaders across the country, who too, are directly working on gender and racial equity in the care economy. Learn more about the discussion here!

The Thriving Providers Project
This week, advocates, policymakers, and community organizations joined Home Grown for a webinar to launch the ‘Thriving Providers Project!’ Home Grown is a national affiliate of our partner, New England United for Justice (NEU4J). The new Thriving Providers Project is an exciting collaborative initiative to support regional partners, like NEU4J, to provide direct cash payments to Family, Friend, and Neighbor (FFN) caregivers and newly-licensed Family Child Care home providers. Providers and caregivers will also receive peer and professional support that reduces isolation and increases access to other resources, and builds wealth.

Care That Works is thrilled to see the Thriving Providers Project take off and support the work of our partners, as they join forces to ensure that public systems embrace home-based caregivers and create an equitable economic foundation for them while also improving access to care for families.

Boston Teachers Union’s 9th Annual Back to School Book Fair

GreenRoots, Boston Society of Landscape Architects, The City of Chelsea, and community volunteers were hard at work co-creating and installing temporary structures to bring to life the community’s vision they had for this space. Congratulations Starbucks workers on their strike victory! 
After 64 days, Starbucks workers at 874 Commonwealth Ave. declared a strike victory Wednesday, the longest strike of its kind in the country. This is an incredible move to hold the company accountable and set a precedent for hundreds of other unionized stores around the country. We’re proud to stand in solidarity with these workers and congratulate them on their victory! Read the statement by workers and more on WGBH.

Northeastern dining hall workers win historic union contract!
We’re empowered by the victory of Northeastern dining workers, as they won a historic four-year union contract and stood united in the fight for living wages, affordable healthcare, and much more! The agreement is acknowledged to be the most lucrative contract in the history of Unite Here Local 26. 400-plus dining hall workers won a $9.32 per hour pay hike, immediate openings for full-time positions for at least three-quarters of the staff, quadrupling pension plan contributions, and guaranteed coverage when someone calls in sick.

“I actually have some money in my pocket,” said Thomas Gross, who was part of the union bargaining committee. “I’m able to help out more with the family, and I couldn’t before.”

New England United for Justice: The Organizing School
Our partners at New England United for Justice (NEU4J) wrapped up their final week of the Organizing School! Each year, NEU4J brings together young people, community leaders, advocates, and more to build unity and power, and learn how to take collective action on the issues our communities care about most. This year, the Organizing School built connections with grassroots organizers in Springfield MA, and discussed important issues like transportation justice and how to organize resources to improve the transit system in Springfield, fair share and tax equity, breaking the race and class divide in our neighborhoods, and igniting civic engagement to reclaim power in our communities. The Organizing School was joined by Arise for Social Justice, Alternatives for Community & Environment, Neighbor to Neighbor, and Transportation for Massachusetts!
