Dear John,

The entire October 2022 issue of Health Affairs will be devoted to examining the relationship between disability and health. Ahead of the issue’s release, sign up for events highlighting research and themes from the issue.
Buprenorphine Treatment
In efforts to mitigate the opioid epidemic, policy makers are enabling increased access to buprenorphine treatment.

In 2016 and 2018, federal legislation addressing continuing shortages of buprenorphine prescribers was passed, allowing advanced practice nurses (APNs) and physician assistants (PAs) to obtain an “X waiver,” a requirement to prescribe buprenorphine in an office-based setting.

Joanne Spetz and coauthors examine trends among providers able to prescribe buprenorphine treatment in office-based settings after being granted access to waivers.

The authors find that APNs accounted for the largest contribution to treatment capacity growth during the pandemic.
Furthermore, the extension of waivers to APNs and PAs particularly improved buprenorphine treatment access in rural communities. These findings signal that enabling these providers to prescribe buprenorphine could play a critical role in expanding access to opioid-related care.
