Building Safer Communities

Dear John,

Every resident of Northeast Pennsylvania deserves to live in a safe community, one where you and your families can thrive. That's why I support legislation that gives our law enforcement heroes the tools they need to fight crime.

On Thursday, I proudly voted to pass a robust public safety package that would increase money for local police departments and provide aid for de-escalation training and mental health services.

The four bills in the package include:

The Invest to Protect Act will help small law enforcement agencies fund training, mental health support, recruitment and retention. This bill gives agencies the flexibility to spend money where it will have the most impact and makes meaningful investments in our officers and our communities.
The Mental Health Justice Act will help send mental health professionals to respond to mental health crises in our neighborhoods.
The Break the Cycle of Violence Act invests in effective, evidence-based community violence intervention initiatives.
The VICTIM Act will bolster the ability of police forces to solve homicides, sexual assaults, shootings and other violent crimes.

We need to be tough on crime, and we need to be smart about it. This legislation takes strong steps to build stronger, healthier relationships between law enforcement officers and the communities they serve. It will allow us to all work together to help prevent crime, save lives and advance justice.

NASA in NEPA

NASA's Jim Reuter and Dr. April Niver, my office's Economic Director, at the University of Scranton.

Right now in Pennsylvania, 63 companies are working with NASA on its Artemis Space Program, preparing to send humans to the moon and beyond.

I'd like to increase that number tenfold.

Today's NASA Business and Industry Day, held at the University of Scranton, included 15 buyers from NASA and related industries and more than 40 small businesses from the region. Over the course of the afternoon, more than 150 individualized matchmaking sessions took place.

I’m convinced Pennsylvania is poised to become a space technology state and was glad to organize today's event. For businesses in Northeast Pennsylvania, the potential to work with NASA continues to expand as NASA programs grow.

Dog's Best Friend

I am honored to have been named a Humane Society Legislative Fund 2021 Legislative Leader. After all, it's no secret who ranks as the favorite member of Team Cartwright whenever I'm out and about in the district.

As a strong believer that all animals - both wild and domestic - deserve to be treated humanely, I support legislation that prevents animal cruelty and will continue to do so in Congress.

Autumn's Arrival

Today marks the official first day of Autumn, which means nights are getting longer and temperatures are cooling down.

It also means the start of fall foliage season with forecasts already rolling out.

The Pocono Mountains Visitors Bureau says the northernmost reaches of Wayne and Pike counties should peak in the first weekend of October while Monroe County isn’t expected to peak until a few weeks later.

I recommend you get out and enjoy all the colors of autumn found in our region's parks and forests or just about anywhere you can find fall scenery where you live.
