Work starts on transforming Nottingham?s Central Library

Central library

Today I had the pleasure of visiting the new Central Library, where work has started on the interior fit-out of the building. The work involves turning the shell of the building ? part of the new Broad Marsh Car Park and Bus Station complex ? into a modern library with a high-quality children?s library and an immersive story telling room and caf?.

The new library, which sits at the heart of the Broad Marsh regeneration area, is spread over three floors, with fully accessible lifts and will feature free wi-fi and access to computers.?It will also feature a specialist and rare collections room for local studies, a learning lab for special activities and school visits, exhibition and performance space and creative design areas.

A new Central Library is one of the key elements of the regeneration of the city?s Southside area and will be surrounded by transformed streets ? creating fully pedestrianised areas with planting and seating and a new plaza that will link through the demolished section of the former shopping centre to Lister Gate and the city centre beyond. ?The council recently bid for ?20m of Levelling Up funding [ [link removed] ] to kickstart the vision for the Broad Marsh site [ [link removed] ].

City-wide programme of repairs to roads, pavements and cycle paths got underway this week

Streets for people

Potholes and poor quality road and pavements are always among the top priorities for local people when I speak to them ? which is why the council has bid for ?11m of Government funding to help address this and more across the city. Ward councillors, who know their neighbourhoods and communities so well, have been working closely with local residents to prioritise how this Levelling Up funding will be spent in their area, so what is certain is the views of the community are at the heart of this initiative.

It was great to see work beginning on this ambitious Streets for People project on Parkdale Road in my ward, which will make our local area safer and easier to get around. All city neighbourhoods will benefit from improvements over the next two years, with updates on where works are happening available here [ [link removed] ] and more information here [ [link removed] ].

Another road improvement scheme gets underway next week, with the road outside the Vat & Fiddle pub on Queensbridge Road being turned into a pleasant traffic-free space with seating, tables and planting. It?s funded from another successful bid to Government and forms part of the Transforming Cities programme, which is bringing so many positive changes to Nottingham. More here [ [link removed] ]

We?re supporting green jobs in Nottingham and beyond

Loft insulation

The Midlands Net Zero Hub forms part of our Carbon Reduction, Energy and Sustainability Division. Through the Hub, we?re pleased to be supporting workers across the country in the construction and green jobs sectors to grow their skills thanks to a new funding competition launched this week.

The Home Decarbonisation Skills Training Competition will award over ?9m of grant funding to further education colleges and other training providers across England to deliver nearly 9,000 courses in the domestic retrofit sector.

Improving the energy efficiency of homes remains one of the best ways to reduce utility bills for residents, while also reducing carbon emissions. This competition will have a real impact on helping people upskill or train for new jobs and making people?s homes more energy efficient.
