Dear neighbor,
January 6th was an incredibly dark day for our democracy. In seeking to disrupt the certification of the 2020 presidential election and prevent the peaceful transfer of power, a terrorist mob incited by the former President descended upon the Capitol Building. The events of that day and the perpetuation of the Big Lie illustrate the need to fortify our sacred democratic processes. That’s why I’m pleased that this week the House passed the Presidential Election Reform Act, a strong, bipartisan bill that will strengthen the integrity of future presidential elections. This legislation takes four urgent, necessary steps:
- Reaffirms that the Vice President has no authority to reject or delay the electoral count in any material way.
- Limits the type of objections that can be raised during certification.
- Requires governors to transmit lawful election results to Congress in a timely fashion – or be compelled to by a federal court.
- Makes clear that states cannot change the rules governing an election after it has occurred.
While Democrats put people over politics, Republicans are doubling down on their extreme MAGA agenda of criminalizing women’s health care, slashing seniors’ Medicare, and attacking our democracy with the rollout of their un-American platform. The contrast is clear – Democrats are For the People and Republicans are for their own power.
Here's a look at some other items I've been working on this week:
- Celebrated House passage of my bill with Representatives Raskin and Yarmuth to ensure a free and independent press by protecting journalists from being compelled by the government to reveal confidential sources.
- Was named a Humane Society Legislative Leader for my work protecting animals from cruel and inhumane treatment.
- Test drove a new electric vehicle made in America by a company called Canoo, headquartered in Torrance. The future is electric!
- Joined Ayman on MSNBC to discuss the DOJ Mar-A-Lago Trump Investigation and more.
