Dear John,

Sir Lewis Hamilton – one of the most successful Formula One drivers in the history of the sport – has been sharing his own experiences of growing up to highlight the need for all children to have access to quality education.

The 2022 Refugee Education Report, titled All Inclusive: The Campaign for Refugee Education’, has just been released and it shows how refugees lag behind their peers when it comes to enrolment in all levels of education.

While the enrolment rates for primary school-aged refugee children are at an average of 68%, they drop dramatically to just 37% at the secondary school level and 6% for tertiary-level education.

Digging deeper into the statistics reveals even more areas of concern, as countries like Chad, Mali and the DRC have exceptionally high drop-out rates, even at the primary level.

We are campaigning for refugee children and young people to be included in national education systems at every level of the education cycle.

Inclusion means:

➤ Physical access to classrooms

➤ Reliable funding for refugee education, including the provision of teachers, fully equipped classrooms and adequate sanitation and hygiene facilities

➤ Access to sit exams and gain qualifications

➤ Closing the digital divide between refugees and children from host countries

Sir Lewis said: “I’m proud to lend my voice to the campaign for refugees to get fair and equal access to a full quality education.

“It’s not just about creating better life chances for young people, helping them to find their purpose and forge their own futures. It’s about the knock-on effects of that: greater diversity in positions of leadership and influence, in the world of work, in sport, culture, politics.”
