John,
We just got documents back that show the Secret Service tracking at least one neo-Nazi group and multiple individuals who planned to engage in violence during the January 6th insurrection. Once again, the documents don’t show to what extent the agency took action to stop the violence being organized by these extremists.
The Secret Service was notified of an online threat posted by a member of the neo-Nazi group on December 28, 2021, and passed it on to U.S. Capitol Police under the subject line “NEO-NAZI calls on D.C. Pro-Trump Protesters to Occupy Federal Building” two days later.
Capitol Police replied to the emails with a mere “Thanks!” and “Thanks bro!”
The Secret Service also received a tip about two individuals flying into Baltimore to later attend the Stop the Steal rally—one of them with “ballistic helmets, armored gloves and vests, rifles and suppressors.” Upon speaking to the Secret Service, both refused to disclose where they would be staying.
Read our new investigation into the Secret Service being alerted about neo-Nazis and secretive individuals intending to bring weapons into DC in the lead up to January 6th.
As we receive more government records, it becomes clearer how much the agency knew about violent groups and individuals arriving at the Capitol on January 6th, and further establishes the agency’s pattern of inadequate response leading up to the insurrection. CREW continues to shed light on how the Secret Service failed to respond to other threats ahead of January 6th, and we’ll continue to push for accountability and transparency around one of the most significant attacks on our democracy.
Thank you,
The CREW Team
