Dear Supporter,
For the last few months, we have been campaigning to highlight the insidious problem of abortion coercion. SPUC supporters have responded enthusiastically to this proactive campaign. Since we began, we have sent out over 8,000 copies of our Coercion: What You Need to Know booklets, and an amazing 46,515 copies of our door-to-door flyer. We are still counting the numbers on the coercion petition, but as hundreds of petition forms and posters have gone out, I am confident that we will have very high numbers.
Thank you so much for all you have done to campaign with us on this issue so far. I am now very excited to announce the next phase – the public awareness campaign.
What is the public awareness campaign?
Coerced abortion is an insidious but little recognised form of abuse. People across the spectrum of opinion on abortion should be able to agree that no woman should be forced or pressured into having an abortion she doesn’t want. Highlighting this abuse is a crucial step in questioning the dogma of choice, and in building a culture of life.
We want to raise public awareness that coerced abortion is a form of abuse. This campaign has two objectives:
1. To reach women who are being coerced, or are at risk of being coerced, into abortion, and signposting them to get help.
2. To raise public awareness of this issue, and to have coerced abortion recognised as a form of abuse and made a priority for health and social policy moving forward.
How does the campaign work?
We have produced a range of materials, including small cards, stickers, posters and beermats, which you can spread around your local community. All of these materials have a QR code. When people scan this, they are taken to a website, which gives information on how to get help if they are being coerced, as well as how to get involved in the campaign.
The idea behind this campaign is that it fits in with your life. If you take the bus to do some shopping, you can leave some of the little cards on the seats. When you go into the public toilet, leave some there. If you go to a pub, leave some beermats.
We have also produced a guide to the campaign (below), which gives some more examples of how you can spread the materials in your community.

You can order the materials, as well as copies of the guide (below).

We’re really excited about this project, which gives you the tools to directly raise awareness among the public. This direct community action also means that help will reach women who are at risk of abortion coercion. Do let us know how you use the materials, and if you have any ideas to expand the range!
How much do the materials cost?
As ever, we are not charging supporters for campaign materials. However, producing these high quality materials does incur higher costs, so if you feel able to make a donation to help offset these, that would be appreciated. Donations from those who are able to give, will help us to make these materials available to students and others unable to contribute financially.
Many thanks again for campaigning with us on this issue.
