| ConocoPhillips’ proposed Willow project could scar the Western Arctic. The oil and gas development project could threaten the region’s critical permafrost, negatively impact the health and traditional practices of nearby Indigenous communities, and disrupt habitat for polar bears, caribou, fish, and millions of migratory birds. |
| Earthjustice took the Trump administration’s Bureau of Land Management (BLM) to court because the agency failed to consider the climate impacts of the project — and we successfully stopped any development. But now, despite its commitment to combat the climate crisis, the Biden administration’s BLM has taken steps towards moving forward with the project. |
| On top of that, an even bigger threat looms. Peregrine is an ongoing exploration drilling project with potentially devastating climate consequences. The company that owns the Peregrine project has already boasted that it could hold 1.6 billion barrels of petroleum, which could result in the release of 645 million metric tons of carbon emissions — more than twice the Willow project. |
| If these projects continue to move forward, their sprawling and invasive infrastructure could set the stage for an oil and gas bonanza in one of the most pristine and sensitive ecosystems in the world. We are committed to fighting these projects and any others like them that will harm our communities and our climate. |
| We are working with our coalition and with all available resources to persuade the administration not to permit the Willow project, and we’ve launched a lawsuit to stop the Peregrine exploration based on BLM’s failure to consider the impacts of its potentially gargantuan greenhouse gas emissions. |
| This week is Climate Week, but we no longer need days on a calendar to remind us of this crisis. The consequences of decades of inaction are becoming impossible to ignore. |
