Their scheme didn’t just begin with conspiracy theorists like Mark Finchem and Jim Marchant -- it began a long time ago, and it’s working.

The Washington Post reports that election offices around the country have been hit with a coordinated campaign of public records requests around the 2020 vote, burying the offices in paperwork. Instead of hiring poll workers, securing polling locations, and mailing absentee ballots, local election officials are buried under a surge of requests.

Let’s be clear: Trump and his ultra-MAGA followers want to break the system. Election deniers like Steve Bannon (who’s currently facing criminal charges in New York) and Mike Lindell (the pillow person) are leading the way, mobilizing Trump supporters behind the scenes to create chaos, slow down preparations, overwhelm election workers, and sow distrust in the process. They know that local officials are legally required to respond to each and every request, even if they’re made in bad faith.

This sham is just one more tool in Trump’s anti-democratic arsenal -- bogus lawsuits and post-election audits claiming fraud, threats and personal attacks against election officials, handpicking election-denying candidates. This is what they’re capable of when they’re not in power.
