Introducing SftP's first book publication since 1980

A New Plan to Capture Greenhouse Gas

This artist’s book situates CO2 disposal in a network of social, political, and ecological connections. These connections give rise to fascinating stories: a failed “CO2 dump” experiment off the coast of Hawaii, an MIT partnership with the state-run oil giant Saudi Aramco, a campaign to deregulate pollution on the high seas, and more.

Andres Chang tells these stories using archival research and reproduction. Important documents from the decades-long history of CO2 disposal have been sequenced, annotated, and drawn over in two series of drawings. One series, The London Convention Drawings, was exhibitioned at the UK-based gallery GroundWork between August and October 2021. The other series, The Green Man, has never been seen before by the public. Both series are printed in full color at nearly 1:1 scale, and they comprise 14 drawings total. The book also features an introduction, an exclusive essay, and a conversation with the activist and physicist Ansar Fayyazuddin.

Proceeds from the book will go toward SftP's organizing work.

About the author

Andres is an artist and researcher who investigates the emergence of worlds in a time of ecological collapse. By working with a diverse range of media and participatory gestures, he advances a shared approach to the production of environmental knowledge. At their core, Andres’s recent projects question the narrative cohesion of how we understand the past or future: piecing together historical artifacts, familial memories, and scientific research tools in a form of speculative performance.

Outside these projects, Andres is a senior researcher at Greenpeace USA and an arts editor at Science for the People magazine. He is also a former member of the New York–based cooperative studio Soft Surplus and a recent artist-in-resident at Caldera Arts.
