I dearly love the Blues and Buddy Guy is a Blues legend.  So, the release of a new Buddy Guy album last month was an occasion for much anticipation.  That is until I heard the single from the album called “Gunsmoke Blues.”  The song is about gun violence and ends with the line “a million thoughts and prayers won’t bring anyone back,” and I’m not much of a Buddy Guy fan anymore.

As our academic institutions have offered more and more fields of study, it has become difficult to distinguish between what is a legitimate intellectual pursuit and what is simply placing an academic patina on some overwhelming obsession.  There is also a difference between studying something and truly coming to understand it.

The best way I can illustrate this would be to look at my area of specialty – science.  Physics is the most mature field of science.  We understand Newtonian motion extremely well, we use it to do everything from build buildings to send rockets to the moon.  We have equations that describe in minute detail how a physical system operates.
