September is Hunger Action Month - Take Action to End Hunger in Our Community
With the lingering effects of covid and food prices rising, the NVFS Hunger Resource Center has seen a 30 percent increase in the need for food this year. The White House has revitalized a national conference uniting the public and private sectors to bring an end to hunger by 2030. However, as Stephanie Berkowitz, NVFS President and CEO, shared in a recent Washington Post op-ed our national leaders can help end hunger long before 2030 if they learn from the bold methods that organizations, like NVFS, use.
One of the most vital aspects of ensuring that our neighbors have the food they need is community support. Learn about the HRC and its needs beyond canned goods and take action to help ensure that your neighbors have the food they need because no one should have to go to bed hungry.

Volunteer Spotlight: Thank You Micron for the New Toy Shed!
One of the highlights of the day for the Early Head Start students at our Georgetown South campus is getting to play on the playground. In addition to the playground equipment, a variety of tricycles, wheeled drivers, and balls are available for the young learners. Between play sessions, these items were stored in a shed that had seen better days.
Thanks to the dedication of several teams from Micron and four full days of work, they rebuilt the shed to safely store the toys. The project was challenging, from disassembling the old shed to rebuilding the structure from the floor to the roof and shingles, and painting it. This skills-based volunteer project is a superb example of one of the many types of opportunities available for organizations to contribute to NVFS, their community, and help even our youngest neighbors to thrive.

Hispanic Heritage Month: September 15 - October 15
Hispanic Heritage Month is an opportunity for us to honor and elevate Hispanic Americans and their contributions to the United States. In Northern Virginia, one of the most diverse areas of the country, Hispanics are one of the region’s fastest growing groups. At NVFS many of our clients identify as Hispanic and we are proud to have many Hispanic employees who help provide services to the Northern Virginia community in culturally and linguistically sensitive ways.
Celebrate the achievements and contributions of this diverse community and learn how to support our Hispanic neighbors this month.
