NOTES FROM THE FIELD | 2022 | No. 9
elusive tiger
POWERFUL, ELUSIVE, AND VANISHING
A tiger's stripes are instantly recognizable—that is, until you're in the lush rainforests of Southeast Asia. Their iconic patterns are are great camouflage, allowing tigers to blend into dark jungle and wooded forest habitats. Combine their concealing coats with a stealthy prowl, and these revered predators practically disappear.

However, as suitable tiger habitat and food sources diminish, it's becoming more difficult for these big cats to go unnoticed. When food is scarce, tigers may prey on livestock and can be perceived as a threat by local communities—making human-wildlife coexistence an increasing challenge. This, along with illegal trafficking of live tigers, as well as poaching for their coats and other body parts, is putting Sumatran tigers at risk. Today, only 400 are estimated to be left in their native habitats.

With you by our side, we're committed to saving these critically endangered big cats. As part of our Asian Rainforest Conservation Hub, we're partnering with local organizations and leaders to better understand these elusive predators, foster sustainable coexistence, and provide key education resources to local communities. Together, we're securing a more hopeful future for Sumatran tigers, people, and the planet we share—in our commitment to a world where all life thrives.

SHARING SPACES

FLOCK TOGETHER
Hornbills are no strangers to community. During the day, these birds forage in pairs, small groups, and even large flocks. At night, they find safety in numbers, roosting together in the canopies of the Asian rainforests. Extending far beyond the treetops, we're honored to be a part of the global community working to save endangered hornbills. Through your support, we partner with local conservation organizations in Southeast Asia to protect hornbills while increasing populations across their native range.

SUPPORTING COMMUNITES
World Rhino Day
THIRD LITTLE MIRACLE
We're honored to welcome a new southern white rhino calf to the crash! Livia gave birth to a healthy boy last month, named Neville. Neville is the third southern white rhino calf born at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park's Nikita Kahn Rhino Rescue Center. He's a crucial addition to the global population of this threatened species, and an important step forward in our efforts to save his cousin, the critically endangered northern white rhino, of which two remain on Earth. Our hope is that one day—through our cutting-edge conservation science and expertise in rhino care—southern white rhinos at the Rhino Rescue Center, including Livia, may be surrogate mothers to northern white rhinos.
Today, on World Rhino Day, we celebrate you and the cutting-edge care and conservation science you make possible for rhinos around the world.
