Team — let’s try a quick thought experiment:
Imagine for a moment what the 2020 election would have looked like if Republican and Democratic officeholders in key presidential battleground states hadn’t stood firm in the face of intense pressure from the Trump campaign and Donald Trump himself.
Mark Finchem, the man running to oversee elections in Arizona, has the answer: Trump “would have won…plain and simple.”
The thought of our very democratic process being overturned by partisan officials is dark — but it’s exactly what Trump is trying to do by stacking the deck with MAGA secretary of state candidates like Finchem in Arizona, Kristina Karamo in Michigan, and Jim Marchant in Nevada. He’s counting on these election deniers to put their thumbs on the scales for him in 2024.

Secretaries of state are supposed to be the guardrails of our democracy — they oversee the election process, ballot counting, and vote certification state by state. And with just a few weeks left until the midterm elections, The American SOS Project is doing everything we can to bolster those guardrails and keep our democracy intact. Unfortunately, Trump’s team figured out where their so-called “weak points” were in 2020 and now they’re patching those leaks to make sure he can’t lose in 2024.
Look, it’s no secret that these candidates are ready and willing to pull strings for Trump. (They’ve said it loud and clear!) But they can do more than throw the results in one candidate’s favor — they can wreak complete havoc on our democratic processes from top to bottom. Here are just a few things observers expect these extreme candidates to do if they win on November 8th:
❌ Make it harder to vote by eliminating vote by mail
❌ Remove early voting and restrict voting solely to Election Day
❌ Purge voter rolls so that infrequent voters lose access to the ballot without any notice
❌ Allow endless audits and sow distrust in our elections
❌ Refuse to certify any results they don’t like
That last one is the big one.
People like Finchem, Karamo, Marchant and others could ensure a Trump victory in 2024 regardless of the will of the people, and that could spell the end of American democracy for good — and they’re betting that not enough people will pay attention to these races before it’s too late.
