Five years after Hurricane Maria devastated Puerto Rico claiming over 3,000 lives, $100 billion in damages, and the longest blackout in US history, the island finds itself once again plunged in darkness with millions of Puerto Ricans lacking access to basic services including clean water, electricity, and communications.
The brunt of the storm’s impact hit areas in the southwestern part of the island where 3,600 homes are still covered by blue tarps from Hurricane Maria five years ago, causing extensive flooding and damage. Decades of disinvestment in the island’s infrastructure alongside draconian austerity measures imposed by an undemocratic control board have decimated the island’s fragile social safety net, deepening the inequitable impact of climate related disasters. From Flint to Jackson, San Juan to New Orleans, we are reminded daily of the ways in which the toxic mix of climate change, racism, colonialism, and inequality pose an existential threat to low-income communities and communities of color across the country. We must do better.
As a racial equity organization, we stand in solidarity with the people of Puerto Rico and invite you to consider donating to the following collaborative philanthropic and community funds that are committed to investing in community led solutions to advance an equitable recovery.
