Dear Friend,

This week, our nation marked National Voter Registration Day, which encourages each person to make sure they are registered to vote. For those who still need to register, you can do so at: Voter Registration (state.nm.us).

The right to vote is one of the most sacred rights guaranteed to all Americans in our Constitution, and is fundamental to our values and the functioning of our democracy. As your Representative in Congress, it’s my job to ensure every eligible community member can participate in our democracy at the ballot box – and that the power of the people is reflected in our election results. That’s why I’m fighting alongside my colleagues to pass legislation that protects voting rights for New Mexicans and Americans across the country.

This week, I helped pass the Presidential Election Reform Act to respond to the increasing threats to our democracy that we witnessed on January 6th. This bill clearly outlines the process of determining the President – how to count votes, clarifying the role of the Vice President as purely procedural, and preventing states from sending competing slates of electors. You can find more information on specifics by visiting my website.

This bipartisan bill will provide deeply important protections for our presidential elections, but our democracy is still under threat from increasing attempts to limit access to the ballot box and the influence of big money in our politics. For this reason, I am proud to have cosponsored and helped pass the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act in the House, cosponsor the Protecting Our Democracy Act, and pass the Freedom to Vote Act. It’s now up to the Senate to pass this critical legislation.

Make sure to register to vote today and always remember to exercise your right to vote. In Congress, I look forward to continuing to support federal efforts to protect voting access – our democracy only works when the voices of all people are heard.

Do you believe that the Presidential Election Reform Act does enough to defend our democracy from election subversion, or do you believe that Congress must do more?
