FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:?September 22, 2022

(LANSING, MICH) The Michigan Department of Insurance and Financial Services (DIFS) is partnering with the National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB), the Lansing Police Department (LPD), and Shaheen Chevrolet to offer motorists a free catalytic converter etching event to help combat theft. Catalytic converter theft has been on the rise during recent years and can cost consumers thousands of dollars in repair costs.

?DIFS is proud to partner with law enforcement and Shaheen Chevrolet to offer Michiganders this opportunity to protect their vehicles from the growing risk of catalytic converter theft,? said DIFS Director Anita Fox. ?Our Department is committed to protecting Michigan consumers and holding responsible those who commit these crimes.?

?From supply chain issues to the exploding market value of precious metals, catalytic converter theft continues to be a major issue across the country,? said David Glawe, President and CEO of the NICB. ?We saw a dramatic 1,215% increase since 2019. Always practice good security hygiene, make sure your auto policy is up to date, call law enforcement and your insurer if you become a victim, and visit NICB.org for more information.?

?This program is a great example of a community partnership that will make a difference in the lives of the Lansing residents,? said Jordan Gulkis, Public Information Director of LPD. ?Etching identifying information into catalytic converters will give officers another tool for investigating these thefts and holding these thieves accountable.?

?Shaheen Chevrolet is committed to the safety of our customers and the greater Lansing community,? said Ralph Shaheen, President of Shaheen Chevrolet.

Thieves target catalytic converters for the precious metals inside that reduce the emission of harmful pollutants in a vehicle?s exhaust. Etching the last 8 digits of the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) into the metal of the converter can help deter thieves from stealing the part and make it harder for them to sell stolen converters to legitimate scrap yards and metal dealers. Replacing the converter and repairing damage caused by the theft can cost as much as $3,000. Vandalism and theft are covered by a comprehensive auto insurance policy, but this coverage is optional and drivers who have not purchased it may end up paying out of pocket for repairs.
