Hello,
We’ve seen more and more conflict. More and more division. Not only in our politics but in our communities too.
In an NBC poll earlier this year, 70% of Americans agreed with the statement: “America has become so polarized that it can no longer solve the major issues facing the country — and that those differences will only continue to grow.”
We're not being honest with ourselves if we don’t acknowledge that there has been an upswing in real, tangible divides among the American people – including among folks in our own state and district. We’ve seen conflict that has affected our faith communities, that has arisen when people go to the gym to work out, and even within neighborhoods.
That's why I was honored to lead my colleagues – nine Democrats and nine Republicans – in introducing the Building Civic Bridges Act. This bill would set up a new pilot program, led by AmeriCorps, to focus on supporting civic organizations and spaces dedicated to revitalizing civic culture and bridge-building across our nation.
People want progress for our nation and region – not political games or partisan extremism. If you agree that we work better when we are united, add your name next to mine to become a citizen co-sponsor of the Building Civic Bridges Act.

One of the fundamental pillars that makes up a healthy democracy is the ability to have disagreements, both big and small. But part of what has ensured that we remain a functioning democracy is our ability as Americans to find our way back together in order to find solutions that work for all of us. In fact, last week I joined President Biden at the White House for the United We Stand Summit to emphasize that very point.
I have hope in the work of community, faith, and civic leaders. We have what it takes to resolve some of the polarizing conflicts plaguing our nation.
If we're going to confront our nation's challenges, we need to work to find enduring and innovative solutions – together. Add your name to support the Building Civic Bridges Act. » [link removed]
As always, it's an honor to represent you,
Derek
