Today is Black Women’s Equal Pay Day, the date on which the average Black woman finally catches up to the amount of money her white male peers earned nine months earlier.
This date changes every year based on average wages calculated across demographics from the previous year.
In 2020, Black women earned 63 cents for every dollar earned by white men for the same work. But in 2021, a year when MANY employers raised wages, the average pay for Black women dropped to 58 cents on the dollar.
Pay equity concerns ALL of us, because these wage gaps affect the entire economy. Lower wages mean Black women (who are often the primary breadwinners in their household) have less spending power – and that translates to less demand and fewer jobs.
If we eliminated the gender wage gap entirely tomorrow, Black women would bring home enough additional income to pay for:
-
Over 2.5 years of childcare
- Over 2.5 years of tuition and fees at a 4-year public university
- Nearly 2 years of rent
There is no excuse, no explanation, nothing that makes this okay.
But we have a chance to turn this all around, starting right now.
Brand New Congress has 14 bold, progressive fighters on the ballot who are committed to the fight for working families, racial justice, and gender justice. Our candidates stand for pay equity, living wages, strong unions, tuition-free college, student debt relief, and universal healthcare.
You can help us get ALL 14 elected and more than *double* the BNC caucus this November. Pitch in $50, $25, or whatever you can today to elect representatives who answer to the people, not corporate interests.
